Joint Manipulation
Question: An office employee wearing flip flops gets their toe jammed underneath the restroom door and falls down, twisting their knee and hip badly. The toe is treated with first aid, but a doctor uses joint manipulation to treat the leg. There was no prescription medicine provided, only OTC ibuprofen recommended. Is it recordable?
Answer: YES. Joint manipulation is not listed as first aid treatment and is therefore considered medical treatment beyond first aid and should be recorded.
Letter of Interpretation: Reduction (joint manipulation) is not a treatment included on the first aid list under 1904.7(b)(5) and therefore it is considered medical treatment for OSHA recordkeeping purposes.
